Let me tell you about the history of the Arenal Volcano:
First. Arenal is a stratovolcano in Costa Rica that has been very active in recent years. An eruption in 1968 wiped out the town of Pueblo Nuevo, killing 78 people. The volcano has produced loud explosions, gas clouds, ash and vapor, and lava flows frequently since the 1968 eruption. Arenal volcano's last major eruption occurred in 2003.
Second. On September 5 2003, several pyroclastic flows occurred and lava began to flow on the N and NE. Seismographs recorded 8 signals and ash drifted W and NW of the volcano. In geological terms, Arenal Volcano is relatively young, only some 4,000 years old. Prior to the 1968 eruption, the arenal volcano's last major eruption has been dated at around 1500 A.D., and lava flows from that period have been tentatively identified.
Third. The volcano (1,633 meters) is a picture-perfect cone. It's also Costa Rica's most active volcano and a must-see on any tourist's itinerary. Arenal Volcano rises to approximately 1633 meters at its summit, although the exact summit height changes frequently due to the volcanic activity. Visitors and locals are treated to displays of its tumultuous and fiery behavier on a regular basis by the Arenal Volcano.
